It took only a month for Americans to turn on Donald Trump — but then again, the president has been working hard to alienate large swaths of the nation by heartlessly and indiscriminately firing federal employees, insulting U.S. allies, lying about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and proving through the House budget proposal that there’s no one too rich to be denied a tax cut, while giving an unelected — and widely unliked — billionaire access to Americans' personal data and the country’s most guarded secrets.

Toss in Trump’s tweet that declared himself a king, meddling in the New York mayor’s corruption scandal and the city’s congestion pricing, planes falling from the skies as the Trump administration fires crucial FAA employees, coast-to-coast protests, and unrest at town halls held by Republican representatives and it’s clear voters are sending a message.

And then there are the optics: While Elon Musk is putting middle-class breadwinners out of work to piggy-bank money for a billionaires tax cut and trillions more piled on to the nation’s debt, he celebrated by mocking those who were fired with a wide grin and a chainsaw at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Thursday.

All of this — along with a failure to keep campaign promises of tamping down inflation and putting a leash on prices — has led to Trump’s rapid popularity decay.

His approval ratings are dropping steadily across several polls. Here’s a roundup of recent surveys:

A Washington Post poll shows that only 45% of Americans now approve of his job performance, while 53% disapprove; 57% said Trump has been exceeded his constitutional authority as president; 62% said Trump is not “honest and trustworthy.”

— That poll reveals that only 34% approve of what Musk has been doing, 49% disapprove, and 14% say they aren’t sure; a staggering 63% are concerned about DOGE getting access to sensitive personal data of individuals.

— In the WaPo poll, Americans were strongly against Trump’s pardons for violent J6 defendants, 83%-14%.

— A Reuters/Ipsos poll has Trump’s approval at 44%, with 51% disapproving. That’s a 10% increase in disapproval in the same poll in only a few weeks.

— In that poll, 53% said the economy is on the wrong track, up from 43% a few weeks ago. Trump now has only a 39% approval from voters on how he has handled the economy so far.

— A Quinnipiac poll has Trump’s approval at 45%, disapproval at 49%.

— A CNN poll has Trump’s approval at 47%, with 52% disapproving.

These numbers are likely to get worse as the effects of Musk’s chainsaw are felt by everyday Americans.

Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett said, “People don’t understand. But you will understand when those hospitals in rural America start closing down even more. You will understand when you don’t have your social security. You will understand when your Medicaid, your Medicare goes away. You will understand when planes continue to fall out of the sky. Maybe Sleepy Joe is what we wanted, because we could at least sleep at night.”

Trump also is hemorrhaging hard-core MAGA supporters.

Trump loyalist and first responder John Feal fumed on CNN after funding for medical care and benefits of 9/11 survivors was eliminated by DOGE.

“If you really want to save money, stop going golfing every day,” he said. “If you really want to save money, don’t go to the Super Bowl. Don’t drive your limo around the racetrack. There you go. I just saved the government a couple billion dollars. Come on. If this is Make America Great Again, we’re screwed.”

Thanks to Feal’s outcry, the White House reversed its decision.
