Your last chance to apply for the ANCHOR property tax benefit is here.
Friday, Dec. 6 is the final day to apply for the benefit, which pays eligible homeowners up to $1,500 and qualifying renters will receive $450. Seniors will also get a bonus $250 added to their payment.
The application deadline was moved a week to give taxpayers extra time to file after the Thanksgiving holiday.
You can apply on the state’s website at nj.gov/treasury/taxation/anchor. And don’t assume that you will automatically get a payment just because you did last year. The state sent notices to more than 1.45 million residents saying that their applications would be filed automatically, but if you didn’t receive the notice, you have to do it yourself.
If you aren’t sure about your application, you can check the status of your benefit on the state’s website at anchor.nj.gov. You can also call the ANCHOR hotline at (609) 826-4282 or (888) 238-1233.
“Phone lines may be busy at times during the ANCHOR season, so applicants may choose to seek in-person assistance at a Regional Information Center or at a number of outreach events hosted this fall across the state,” the Treasury Department said.
The state has been making payments on a rolling basis, so far sending more than $2 billion to about 1.7 million taxpayers. That includes more than 1.1 million homeowners who have received more than $1.7 billion in payments, and 500,000 renters who have received more than $262 million in benefits, it said.
