Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett — a rising star in the Democratic ranks because of her brash and fearless truth-telling — was one of several Democrats who walked out during Donald Trump’s presidential address on Tuesday night.
During his 100-minute speech — the longest by a president — Trump hinted that he and the Republican Congress would strip Americans of Social Security benefits, the U.S. would over the Panama Canal and Greenland, and he would tighten the vise of tariffs that already are threatening to spark a trade war with the nation’s three biggest trading partners — China, Canada and Mexico.
Trump trotted out the greatest cultural hits of his campaign rallies — bouncing between demonizing immigrants and transgender Americans — while barely addressing the inflation that his economic policies, which the Wall Street Journal called “dumb,” are injecting with steroids.
After the speech, Crockett begged someone to grab her by the shoulders and shake vigorously.
“This is not what we should be doing,” she said. “I don’t know why we’re fighting with Greenland. Why are we fighting with Greenland? We fighting with Canada. We fighting with Mexico, yet we in love with [Russian president Vladimir] Putin?
“What is happening? Like, this is not America. This is a terrible nightmare. Somebody slap me and wake me the f--k up, because I’m ready to get on with it.”
She added on social media: "He’s up there, he’s spewing all kinds of nonsense and bullsh-t. Let me just be real, and we weren’t just going to sit for that sh-t.
“We are going to fight him tooth and nail. We are going to combat all the lies, and we are going to continue to serve the people that even went out and elected him to their own dismay.”
While several Democrats walked out in protest of Trump’s lies and exaggerations, others remained in the chamber to call him out. Democratic Rep. Gil Cisneros of California shouted at Trump, “What about the $400 million Tesla contract!” as the president discussed his cuts to the federal government.
Democrats increasingly groaned, shouted, “Not true!” and “Those are lies!” as Trump listed cuts his administration, under the guidance of billionaire Elon Musk, insists it has made to the federal budget — although many have been debunked.
Democrats held up signs that read, “Musk steals” and “Protect Veterans” and “Save Medicaid.” Many Democrats quietly chatted with each other while others tapped or scrolled on their phones.
While wearing the words “Resist” printed on the backs of their shirts, a handful of Democrats exited the House chamber.
Rep. Veronica Escobar, of Texas, shouted, “January 6th” as Trump recounted his plans for combatting crime throughout the country. At least a dozen Democrats joined in the repeated chant as Trump discussed the need to crack down on violent criminals.
Trump pardoned around 1,500 rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021, in a bid to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
