New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton enters the start of free agency on Wednesday with optimism.
With his six-year Giants tenure likely to close, the 28-year-old might not have to wait too long to find his next team because he’s getting a “lot of interest,” per The New York Daily News in a story published Monday. Slayton’s priorities are clear as he hits the market.
“Definitely, winning and being in an advantageous situation are probably two things that are really important for me right now,” Slayton told the Daily News on “The Talkin’ Ball with Pat Leonard” podcast. “Obviously, five out of my six years with the Giants we weren’t competitive. We didn’t make the playoffs. We weren’t really close to making the playoffs. ...
“I have learned over my career that I do want to go off and I do want to get paid, Slayton said. ”But it weighs on me so heavy just losing. Every. Single. Week. I can’t take [it]. Like, there’s no money that’s gonna make me just go home and be like — I’m obviously gonna be a little more happy in my Hellcat than in a Camry — but like my spirit, the core of me cannot take that.”
Slayton was drafted in the fifth round of the 2019 draft. During his tenure, he started in 66 of 92 games and recorded 259 catches — twice reaching 50 in a single season — and 3,897 yards with 21 total touchdowns. Last season was one of his worst, recording 39 catches on 71 targets for 573 yards and two TDs. He played in 83% of the Giants' offensive snaps.
While Slayton likely won’t be a team’s top or secondary option, he would fit in well as a No. 3 wide receiver whose speed can open up downfield opportunities.
