McDonald’s has combined a classic ice cream dish and a classic candy bar into one dessert. Will it be a classic McFlurry?
The latest ice cream creation swirled into McDonald’s on Wednesday — the Kit Kat banana split McFlurry. Everybody loves Kit Kats. Everybody loves banana splits. What’s not to love here!
“Put the break in summer break with the original ‘Gimme a break’ candy...in a McFlurry!” the McDonald’s website explains. “It has strawberry and banana flavors with Kit Kat chocolate pieces blended in creamy vanilla soft serve.”
McFlurry offerings have historically been more interesting internationally than here in the United States — Canada’s caramel popcorn McFlurry and Europe’s Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry come to mind. We got... the Grandma McFlurry, with a confusing name and a perplexing texture. A Kit Kat banana split McFlurry sounds so good that I automatically assumed it was going to another country.
Nope. It’s ours. And I was psyched to try it.
Few candies have a higher approval rating than Kit Kats, which checked in at No. 3 in my latest Halloween candy rankings. And the only reason people don’t get banana splits more is because there’s no such thing as a small one, so ordering one is a major culinary commitment. Making a smaller version of the dish, and adding a beloved candy into the mix? Brilliant. Side note, banana split-flavored Dippin’ Dots rule.
It took just a few bites to confirm what I expected. The Kit Kat banana split McFlurry is terrific.
Chocolate pieces, plus strawberry and banana pieces, plus vanilla ice cream equal delicious. I was curious how the fruit pieces would hold up — they appeared to be dried fruit, a midpoint between fresh fruit and fruit-flavored syrup — and while the texture is a bit dicey at times, it’s unquestionably tasty.
The Kit Kat component is also scrumptious, though I will say it didn’t necessarily feel like Kit Kat. Perhaps it’s because of the way they were chopped, or maybe because they get cold after being swirled into the ice cream. Whatever the case, the chocolate almost takes on the texture of Buncha Crunch. That’s not a bad thing, but I like Kit Kat better.
The more I ate the dessert, the more it tasted like a Kit Kat McFlurry with hints of strawberry and banana. It could have used some more fruit, and it could have been swirled more evenly. But we’re splitting pears, sorry, hairs at this point.
I still think the McFlurry is an inferior dessert to the Wendy’s Frosty — and you never have to worry about the Frosty machine being broken. But this is one of the best McFlurries we’ve gotten in America, and certainly a major improvement over the Grandma McFlurry.
