Investigators ID bicyclist fatally struck by New Jersey State Police SUV

The bicyclist who died last week after being hit by a New Jersey State Police SUV in Warren County was identified Monday as a 59-year-old Morris County man, investigators announced Monday.

Raul L. Diaz, of Washington Township, was hit by New Jersey State Police Sgt. First Class Kesene Grier on Feb. 5 shortly after 6 a.m. on Willow Grove Street near Brook Hollow Drive in Hackettstown, according to a release from the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.

Diaz was taken to Hackettstown Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 7:17 a.m., the office said.

No other information about the crash has been released by the office, which said Monday it was still under investigation.

Grier has been with the New Jersey State Police since September 2004, according to her biography on the state police website. Authorities identified her for the first time as the officer driving the SUV in their Monday announcement.

The attorney general’s office investigates any time there is a death that occurs during an encounter with police.
