Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop did more than announce he won’t seek re-election in 2025 on Tuesday. He revved up speculation about who may be seeking to succeed Phil Murphy as New Jersey’s governor three years from now.

Fulop’s decision is widely seen as a sign he’s setting himself up to be a candidate in the 2025 gubernatorial race — an election that already has a big crowd of potential contenders jockeying behind the scenes for the open seat. Murphy is limited to two terms and can’t run again.
