Tens of thousands of homes and businesses in New Jersey lost power Sunday and Monday because of powerful winds whipping in the wake of our latest winter storm.
NJ.com’s Power Outage Tracker, which monitors outage numbers from the four major utility companies in the state, showed more than 30,000 utility customers across the Garden State without power as of 6 p.m. Sunday.
About 11,000 customers were still without power shortly before 11 a.m. Monday after overnight winds — some as powerful as 70 mph — took down power lines.
The biggest clusters of outages Sunday night were reported in the southern part of the state, from Burlington and Camden counties down to Cape May.
Weather forecasters were expecting winds to ramp up as high as 50 to 60 mph at times on Sunday and Monday as a strong cold front drifts across New Jersey.
Many areas of the Garden State are under a high wind warning, effective through Monday afternoon or Monday evening, depending on the location. Other areas are under a wind advisory.
“Wet soils combined with the high winds could result in extensive tree damage,” the National Weather Service said. “The strong winds will usher in much colder air, with temperatures in the 20s and 30s and wind chills in the teens. Potential for power outages combined with the cold could exacerbate the impacts of this high wind event.”
