A man who fell into the Shark River from a walkway beneath a bridge died Thursday night, police said.
Authorities in Belmar retrieved the man from the water after being called to the Route 35 bridge, police said. He was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center but was pronounced dead after doctors failed to revive him.
The man’s name was withheld Friday while authorities notified his family. Authorities were called to the bridge by a witness who tried to rescue the man, police said. The witness told police they saw the man fall over guardrails separating the walkway from the water.
Police began searching near Belmar Marina’s north side, and found the man submerged beneath the walkway’s railing. He was unresponsive when officers found him.
Rescuers and police from Belmar’s neighboring town arrived and lifted the man from the water, police said. The death remained under investigation as of Friday.
