A high school student was arrested Tuesday after bringing a knife to school and threatening two classmates, police said.
The 17-year-old student, whose name was not made public, is charged with unlawful possession of weapon, possession of weapon for unlawful purpose and terroristic threats, the South Brunswick Police Department said in a news statement.
Two students reported the threat at South Brunswick High School shortly after 2 p.m. The school was placed on lockdown while police conducted a search, officials said.
A description of the student was provided to the school resource officer, Detective Scott Bucca, who immediately identified a the student.
Bucca and several other officers then found the student in a classroom. Following a search that recovered a folding knife, the student was taken into custody, authorities said.
Police Chief Raymond Hayducka praised Bucca and the other officers for acting so quickly.
“That situation was evolving rapidly and everyone took action to ensure it did not escalate,” Hayducka said.
The lockdown was lifted at 2:50 p.m. The school will have an increased police presence for the next few days.
