For the second straight day, window-rattling winds have been whipping across New Jersey, with some gusts peaking near 60 mph.
The fierce winds continue to topple trees and snap electrical lines Monday afternoon, sparking power outages in thousands of homes and businesses in the Garden State.
A tree fell Monday morning on railroad tracks along the North Jersey Coast Line in Spring Lake, causing rail service to be suspended between Long Branch and Bayhead, officials said. The tree was removed and service was restored by the afternoon.
Downed wires were reported Monday afternoon on at least three state highways — Route 1 South in South Brunswick, Route 38 West in Mount Laurel and Route 206 in both directions in Princeton.
What’s causing these wild winds? The National Weather Service says the atmosphere is being stirred up by the big difference in pressure between a strong low pressure system northeast of our region and a strong high pressure system in the northern Plains and Mississippi Valley.
