Bob Dylan movie “A Complete Unknown” wrapped production in New Jersey just a month ago, but the first teaser trailer for the movie is already out.
That’s probably because the movie, starring Timothée Chalamet as a young Dylan, is being fast-tracked into theaters this December.
The Searchlight Pictures film (see trailer below), directed by James Mangold (“Ford v Ferrari,” “Walk the Line,” “Cop Land”) will therefore make the cutoff for possible contention in the 2025 Oscars.
The trailer provides a first sampling of Chalamet performing Dylan’s music in the movie, slated for a Christmas Day opening.
The song that the actor sings in the clip is “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” from Dylan’s second album, “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan,” released in 1963.
Chalamet and other actors sing live in the film.

“A Complete Unknown” is not some life-spanning biopic.
Chalamet, 28, who was nominated for an Oscar for “Call Me By Your Name,” plays Dylan during his ascension as a young folk music enthusiast who rockets to fame in the 1960s.
The film shows a 19-year-old Dylan in New York fresh out of his home state of Minnesota.
Mangold and Chalamet, who also stars in the “Dune” movies, filmed all over Jersey, including but not limited to Hoboken, Jersey City, Newark, Paterson, Passaic, Plainfield, Mountainside and Cape May.
Though they also filmed in Manhattan — including at Dylan’s old haunt, the Chelsea Hotel — Jersey stood in for New York’s Greenwich Village as well as Newport, Rhode Island.

Scenes filmed in Cape May — using many Jersey extras and background actors — recreated the 1965 Newport Folk Festival where Dylan went “electric” by playing an electric guitar in public for the first time, ruffling some feathers in the folk community.
The official description of the film describes Dylan’s Newport moment as the “culminating” event of the story.
Of course, 1965 was also the year of Dylan’s song “Like a Rolling Stone,” which he performed at the Newport Folk Festival and which gives the movie its title.
(“How does it feel?” Dylan sings. “To be on your own, with no direction home / A complete unknown, like a rolling stone.”)
Emmy nominee Elle Fanning (”The Great”) plays Sylvie Russo, a character based on Suze Rotolo, who was in a relationship with Dylan in the ‘60s and appears with him on the cover of “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.”
Monica Barbaro (”Top Gun: Maverick”) plays folk legend Joan Baez, who was both musically and romantically involved with Dylan.
Oscar nominee Edward Norton plays another folk legend, Pete Seeger.

Norton starts the trailer as Seeger, telling an audience the story of how Dylan visited Seeger and his hero Woody Guthrie — “he dropped in on us out of nowhere and he played us a song,” Seeger says.
“In that moment, we got a feelin’ we were gettin’ a glimpse of the future,” he continues.
A young Dylan famously visited folk star Guthrie, who was suffering from Huntington’s disease, when he was at Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital in Morris County. Guthrie died in 1967.
The beginning of the trailer also features a shot of Moran’s, a pub on Garden Street in Hoboken given a ‘60s makeover to become McAnn’s bar, a New York watering hole where Chalamet filmed in April.
The clip also shows Chalamet in Jersey City (as Greenwich Village) and his Dylan heading into a car and away from a crush of fans in a scene filmed in Paterson.

The main cast is rounded out by Boyd Holbrook (Mangold’s “Logan”), Dan Fogler (the “Fantastic Beasts” movies), Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz (”Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” ”The Exorcist: Believer”) and Scoot McNairy (”!2 Years a Slave”).
“A Complete Unknown,” written Mangold and Jay Cocks (“Gangs of New York”), is produced by Mangold and Chalamet.
Jersey actors in the film include Charlie Tahan (“Ozark”), who grew up in Glen Rock, and P.J. Byrne (“Babylon”), from Old Tappan.
