Toll increase coming on this N.J. bridge and there’s a way drivers can avoid it

The clock is ticking for drivers paying cash at the Delaware Memorial Bridge, who will pay a higher toll on April 1 unless they switch to E-ZPass electronic toll payment.

That is the first of a two-phased toll structure. The first increases tolls by $1 for passenger vehicles from $5 to $6 and $1 per axle for commercial vehicles or any dual tire vehicle at the bridge that connects New Jersey and Delaware.

All E-ZPass rates, including commuter and discount plans, are unchanged, meaning approximately 79% of bridge customers will not pay the higher rate, said Thomas J. Cook, Delaware River Bridge Authority Executive Director.
