The photorealistic “Lion King” prequel “Mufasa: The Lion King” hit theaters in December 2024, but when will it be available to stream on Disney+?
The musical film is now available to stream on video-on-demand platforms, including AppleTV+ and Amazon Prime Video. It’s still pricey, though — $24.99 to rent and $29.99 to buy — so, many fans are waiting to stream the movie for free on Disney+.
While the streaming platform has not announced an official release date yet, it’s likely that “Mufasa: The Lion King” will be available to stream on Disney+ beginning in March 2025.
Per Forbes, a March 2025 release would be consistent with Disney+’s pattern of releasing films on the streaming platform about three months after the theatrical release.
For example, “Inside Out 2” was released in June 2024 and hit Disney+ that September, and “Haunted Mansion” debuted on the streaming platform in October 2023, three months after its July 2023 theatrical release.
“Mufasa: The Lion King” is both a sequel and a prequel to 2019’s “The Lion King,” which is a remake of the 1994 animated film of the same name. The 2024 movie centers on Simba’s father, Mufasa, as a young lion cub.
Mufasa: The Lion King’s stars include Aaron Pierre (Mufasa), Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Taka), John Kani (Rafiki), Seth Rogen (Pumbaa), Billy Eichner (Timon), Tiffany Boone (Sarabi), Donald Glover (Simba), and Blue Ivy Carter (Kiara). Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the songs for the film.
During a December 2024 appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” Miranda spoke about trying to live up to the songs from the original film, which were written by Elton John and Tim Rice.
“I think working on ‘Mufasa’ raised the bar for me because I knew I was stepping into the world of Lion King. That original album is, like, an all bangers, no skip album,” he said. “I went into every song in ‘Mufasa’ with that energy of, ‘This is a no skips album.’”
