The Mets made a big roster decision on Tuesday.

Right-hander Sean Reid-Foley was designated for assignment (DFA), officially removing him from the team’s 40-man roster. While his time with the Mets isn’t officially over yet, the move indicates the battle for the team’s remaining bullpen spot is down to two, Danny Young and Huascar Brazobán.

Reid-Foley was a valuable piece of the Mets' bullpen last season, posting a 1.66 ERA in 23 appearances. But he’s struggled to stay healthy, battling a right shoulder impingement that landed him on the IL multiple times in 2024.

By DFAing him, the Mets risk losing Reid-Foley through the waiver process. If he’s not picked up by another team, he faces two options: be outrighted to Triple-A or refuse the assignment and become a free agent.

Either way, the Mets feel good about their options. In Young, they get a left-hander who proved worthy of a bullpen spot for much of last season, where in 42 appearances he posted a 4.54 ERA.

Young’s issue is his lack of consistency. For a 21-game stretch last season, he allowed three earned runs in 21 innings, striking out 29 batters.

Brazobán was less impressive after being acquired from the Marlins at the trade deadline. After posting a 2.93 ERA in 20 appearances with Miami, he allowed 12 earned runs in 21 innings (5.14 ERA) with the Mets.

The right-hander also has options remaining, making him more flexible for the roster. Young doesn’t have any options remaining, meaning he’ll have to be DFA’d before being demoted.
