An official decision on whether the Eagles will visit the White House to meet with President Donald Trump has not been announced, but one player offered insight into the situation, suggesting the team has yet to discuss a potential visit.
On his “Big Play Slay” podcast released Wednesday, cornerback Darius Slay—who said he avoids politics—questioned reports that the team had already made a decision.
“I don’t know where the fact that we were not visiting came from because we did not have a team meeting or any other kind of meeting about going or not going,” Slay said. “We don’t know how that is going to play out, so we will see how that goes.”
A Feb. 9 report from The U.S. Sun claimed the Eagles had declined an invitation with “a massive no” to visit the White House. However, according to OutKick’s Clay Travis and CNN’s Jake Tapper, the Eagles have not rejected an invitation, and an official invite had not been extended.
Slay added that teammates were surprised by the report, saying they had not discussed it and did not know where the claim originated. He emphasized that regardless of the decision, his focus is on celebrating with his teammates and receiving the championship ring he worked for.
“I don’t know what the situation is, to be honest, if we’re going or not,” Slay said. “I’m really just looking forward to that ring so I can put it in my little case and have all my stuff set up real nice because that’s all I really care about. I care about my ring and celebrating with my guys.”
