Bryce Harper would’ve liked to see Pete Alonso in Philadelphia.
So much so, that he was willing to switch positions to make room for the slugger.
The Phillies veteran told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic that he would have moved to the outfield if the Phillies were looking to sign Alonso.
“When Pete was on the block still, I kind of sat there and was like, ‘Hey, why not?’ When we talked about it, I kind of just reiterated to (the Phillies) and Scott (Boras) that I’m willing to move out there if it’s going to help us. I love playing first base. It’s been great. But if it’s going to help us win, I’d go back out there.”
Of course, Alonso returned to the Mets on a two-year, $54 million contract.
The four-time Silver Slugger came up through the Mets system and tested free agency this winter before landing back in New York last month.
“For me, this was it,” Alonso said in February. “I mean, throughout the entire off-season, we had the best dialogue from the Mets. And, like, that was it. For us, this was the best opportunity. And for me, I’m just really happy to be back.”
